I am Professor of Sociology
at Duke University.
I am interested in the social organization of exchange and the moral order of market societies. In
the past I have written about exchange in human
blood and organs, cultural goods, software, and ideas. My current work focuses on the effects of
automated methods of scoring and ranking on social classification, and the many consequences this has for individuals and
institutions. I also work on techniques and methods for data visualization, and some problems in social theory.
